TBI-Traumatic Brain Injury is caused by trauma or force to the brain. Many include what are also considered ABI-Acquired Brain Injury such as those from a drug overdose, or a stroke. Either term is considered a documented TBI for the NY DOH TBI Waiver Program. There are also times when a patient can be diagnosed with a brain injury but the cause may not be known. There are cases that have been caused from prolong abuse, infections and aneurisms.

TBI can cause seriously reduced functioning and death.

Healing from a TBI takes time, and understanding. Most people have residual and/or permanent deficits ranging from hemi-parses, speech deficits, mobility loss, memory loss, cognitive deficits and emotional difficulties. They and their families have to adjust to a very different set of abilities.

Many individuals recovering from a TBI are having to look at their life in a new light, and with new goals. This can cause frustration and at times depression or anxiety issues.

Knowing where to go for assistance and direction after you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a TBI is crucial. The NY State TBI Waiver Program is open for anyone in NY state to apply for, regardless of income. The services are paid for through the NY State Medicaid System, but in order to be accepted to Medicaid you do not have to have low income, or have no assets. There are legal steps to take that will allow funds to continue to be used and let the participant receive Medicaid and therefore the TBI Waiver Services.

In order to find out if you or a loved one can proceed with applying for the TBI Waiver you would contact the local Regional Resource Development Center. A specialist will guide you through the intake process and assist with Medicaid questions.

You can apply for Medicaid and the TBI Waiver regardless of income. Contact your local Regional Resource Development Center.
